The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

Pat Cummins has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors around that, aside from his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
