In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Government Discussions Taking Place
In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
