Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
