British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, located using surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several entry passages providing entry to the site... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among a great many British personnel stationed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush killed two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
